This blog post shares about the perfect Sunday routine you need in your life!
The perfect formula for a Sunday routine requires a blend of productivity, fun and rest. Routines are all about setting ourselves up for success and are especially helpful when we have a lot of responsibilities to take care of. Just like how evening routines set you up to have a good following day, Sunday routines set you up to have a good week ahead. Lots of people like to look at their Sunday routine as a big reset day.
Before we dive into the perfect formula, here are a few things to note:
Your Sunday routine can be followed on any day of the week, just as long as it’s the day before your new week starts. Do you work Tuesday through Saturday and view your weekends as Sundays and Mondays? Then you’d do this routine on your Mondays!
When it comes to the weekend, I’m usually booked and busy on Saturdays, but I’ll occasionally have something to do on Sundays. If this is the case for you, too, just do your best to continue following your Sunday routine around whatever plans you have.
1. Wake up early (or at least on time.)
While you might use your weekends or days off to catch up on sleep, consider waking up early for your Sunday routine instead. Why? You’ll be able to get more done! Plus, if you have a goal to wake up earlier during the week, this is the perfect time to test run that early morning alarm. If none of that sounds good, just try your best to not sleep in much past your normal wake up time.
2. Get some exercise in.
Although a lot of us view Mondays as the beginning of the week since we’re back at work, Sunday truly is the start of it. What better way to kick it off than with a good workout? Hit the gym for a sweat session or go on a nice, long walk. My husband and I came up with the concept of “destination walks” — AKA, driving to a location like a park or outdoor shopping plaza and going for an hour walk. It’s something that we look forward to and adds in a fun element that we normally don’t incorporate on weekdays.
3. Treat yourself to takeout at some point.
You’re busy getting your life in order on Sundays, so be good to yourself and get some takeout for one meal. Treat yourself to your favorite drink (and cake pop) from Starbucks. If you love getting breakfast at a diner, schedule that in! Or maybe indulge in your favorite pizza and save the leftovers for Monday’s lunch.
4. Wash your bedding and catch up on laundry.
There’s nothing more satisfying than crawling into bed at night with crisp, clean sheets waiting for you. It’s ideal to wash your bedding once a week, so make this a non-negotiable in your Sunday routine. If you’ve fallen behind with your laundry or Sunday is one of your designated laundry days, start it early and keep up with the cycles throughout the day. I like to have a folding session at the end of the day when I’m winding down watching a TV show.
5. Do some meal prep.
Although I don’t do this every Sunday, I am big on meal prepping. Why? Because it buys me back so much time throughout the week! This blog post “3 Awesome Reasons To Have A Meal Prep Routine (+ How To Get Started!)” details how you can create your very own meal prep routine. I love to prep lunches because in all honesty, it’s my least favorite meal of the day. When I don’t have to make a deli wrap or stare into my fridge for something to scrounge up for my midday fuel, I’m a much happier person.
6. Refresh your space.
I’m a highly sensitive person, so my space truly affects my mood. When it’s messy and disorganized, I tend to feel all out of sorts. On Sundays, I focus on tidying up my bedroom, living room, kitchen and bathrooms. I don’t go overboard — I do just enough to get things back in order.
7. Plan for the week ahead.
This is one of my favorite parts of my Sunday routine! Make sure you take some time to sit down and look at your schedule. Take note of any appointments, commitments, gym days, etc. and write them down. When you do this, you can visualize and mentally prepare yourself for the week ahead. If there’s anything you can do to physically prepare (ex. packing your gym bag) be sure to do that, too.
8. Follow your full self-care routine.
Your Sunday routine is the time to go all out with your self care. Take that “everything shower” or go the extra mile with your skincare routine. Do whatever it takes to feel your best because when you feel good, you set yourself up for success!
9. Chill out.
In between all of your productive activities, make sure you slow down and let yourself relax as much as possible. Whether you decide to catch up on some reading or just veg out in front of the TV watching your favorite comfort show, give yourself the permission to turn your brain off for a little while. You deserve it!
