Make your summer routine a dreamy one with these 5 tips.
Ahh, summer. Long, sun-filled days spent outside or by the water. Bonfires, popsicles, flip flops, vacations, cookouts… The list of fun things to do goes on and on. But what does your overall summer routine look like? How is it different than your spring, fall, and winter routines? The five ideas I’m going to share with you below are perfect for incorporating into your summer routine. Read on to find out why!
5 IDEAS FOR YOUR SUMMER ROUTINE
1. Try to spend a portion of your morning outside.
Spending time outside in the morning is something to especially aim for if you live in a super hot climate. When the main hours of the day are unbearable from the heat, it’s more likely that you’ll opt to stay inside. To avoid that, spend the first hours of your days outdoors when the sun isn’t as strong. Go for your daily walk or jog during sunrise. Give your garden a good watering before the sun can bake it. Sip on a smoothie while sitting on your patio. Getting fresh air like this is ideal before spending hours indoors in the air conditioning. As much as I adore AC, the recycled air can become pretty stagnant. It’s very important to get some good quality air in your lungs first thing in the morning.
2. Hydrate like it’s your job.
We need more water in the summer — it’s just a simple fact. We’re sweating way more than normal, so it’s our job to replenish our hydration stores by drinking more water. Make it part of your routine to take a reusable water bottle with you everywhere you go. The moment it’s empty or close to it, get up and refill it. For an extra boost of hydration, I love drinking Liquid IVs. The golden cherry and strawberry flavors are my favorite!
3. Take advantage of the longer days.
Summer days give us the longest stretches of sunlight. While you should still aim to get 8 hours of sleep every night, the summer is the time to wake up early and/or stay up late. During the winter months, we’re naturally more sluggish and crave more sleep. In the summer, our bodies sync with nature: we tend to feel more light and vibrant. Try to see the sunrise and sunset in the same day. Start work earlier in the day so you can squeeze in a few hours at the beach in the afternoon. Stay out late at the drive-in theater to watch a movie with your friends. We can handle a lot more during the summer!
4. Do more things at night.
If you work a typical 9-5 office job, then you might have some sour feelings about summer. Sure, you can use some PTO for a week or two of vacation, and that’s great — but it doesn’t quell those jealous feelings when you see other people who have the entire summer off. So what can you do? Take advantage of the night time! You still have a good chunk of sunlight to work with, plus there’s plenty to do once it gets dark out. (A bonfire and s’mores, anyone?) It’s also the ideal time to check some simpler things off your summer bucket list, too.
5. Make applying sunscreen a non-negotiable.
Without a doubt, the sun is stronger in the summer months. No matter who you are, we are all at risk of getting sun damage. So when you’re applying your skincare in the morning, make sure to add in a product with SPF in it. Don’t neglect the rest of your body, either. Opt for a daily lotion that contains SPF. When you know you’re going to spend time outdoors, take the couple of minutes to apply a layer of sunscreen. Be extra careful about reapplying when you spend time swimming, too. I know I tend to get bad sunburns on pool days when I’m lackadaisical about putting more sunscreen on. Here’s a list of my favorite SPF products:
- RoC Multi Correxion 5 in 1 Anti-Aging Daily Face Moisturizer with Broad Spectrum SPF 30 — I use this SPF in my morning skincare routine every single day, no matter what the season!
- Eucerin Daily Hydration Moisturizer & Sunscreen Lotion, Fragrance Free SPF 15 — This lotion is the best because it does a great job of hydrating and gives you a layer of protection since SPF 15 is already included. This is perfect for all seasons, especially if you find yourself out in the sun unexpectedly and don’t have your regular SPF with you.
- Neutrogena UltraSheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen Lotion, Broad Spectrum SPF 55 — This is my go-to body sunscreen for direct sun exposure. It’s not sticky, doesn’t smell too weird, and does a great job of protecting my skin.
- Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen – SPF 40 — This is my go-to face sunscreen for direct sun exposure. The texture of this stuff is unreal! It feels luxurious when you put it on. Plus, the protection is next level!
