When you’re a student, any time you have to study is precious. Outside of going to school, you have your personal life to attend to. Things like extracurricular activities, jobs, hanging out with friends, doing chores, etc. are very important and can’t be neglected. The leftover time is what you have to use for completing homework and studying. Needless to say, that’s probably a pretty short amount of time. You need to make the most of those limited hours with a productive study routine!
Below is the best productive study routine you’ll ever find. You will be able to tailor it to your own unique situation, but it’s a blueprint that can work for any student.
Productive Study Routine
- Block out your study time. Look at your schedule and identify the free time that you have. In some cases, you might have to reschedule plans to make more time for studying, but most of the time you’ll be able to make the most of said free time. Put this time block on your calendar so you have a visual commitment to studying.
- Use the Pomodoro technique. This is the secret sauce that makes my productive study routine the best there is. I’ve talked about the Pomodoro technique a bunch of times here on Routine Ready because it’s my favorite study method! If you don’t already know, this technique incorporates scheduled breaks after each chunk of solid work. Learn more about it here and use this timer when you hit the books.
- ⭐️ TIP: Make the most of your breaks! Level the Pomodoro technique up even further by partaking in self-care activities during breaks. Make a cup of tea, put on some under eye gel patches, brush your teeth, etc… Filling your self-care cup when you’re working hard is one of the best ways to prevent burnout.
- Study first, review last. When I was in high school, I used to get overly enthused and would make flashcards right away during a study session. I’d be frustrated when I’d flip through them and not be able to get the answer correct on the first try. Spending time with your notes and texts first will prevent you from wasting precious study time. Being able to move on to making flashcards can serve as a signal to you that you have learned the material and can start the reviewing process!

- Get comfortable! Before a big study session, try to do whatever possible to get physically comfortable. Eat a snack, take a shower, or change into sweats or PJs. When you’re comfortable, you’ll naturally be more productive.
- Switch subjects every so often. Whether you’re studying during a normal time or trying to hit every subject before finals, you’ll burn out if you stay focused on one thing for way too long. I recommend maxing out anywhere between 2-3 hours on one subject.
- Incorporate movement into your breaks. Breaking out of a hunched study position will make you feel a million times better and will help you to absorb your study material even more. Get up from your desk to stretch during your shorter breaks, and consider going on a walk or doing some yoga on your longer ones.
