A daily routine at home is crucial to living a simple life. Read on to find out how to hone your very own routine.
A lot happens at home. It’s where we live, after all! In recent years, many of us have found ourselves at home more than ever. Tons of people work remotely or stay at home with their children. Even if you spend the majority of your days at an office or out in public, you still always start and end your days at home. A daily routine at home is necessary to keep you and your household running smoothly. With one in place, you’ll be able to consistently keep up with your to-dos and won’t find yourself completely overwhelmed.
You can make your daily routine at home as complicated or simple as you want. Just make it be whatever is easiest for you to complete every day.
Here are the four main points to consider when creating your daily routine at home:
1. Start with the non-negotiables.
What are the tasks that must be done around your house on a daily basis? You might want to think about your non-negotiables with times of days in mind. In my home, my husband and I have specific household to-dos in the mornings and evenings. Each morning, we make the bed, empty the dishwasher and dish rack, as well as open all our blinds and curtains. Each evening, we close the blinds and curtains, fully clean up from dinner (which includes wiping down the dining table and counters, fully cleaning our electric stovetop, washing dishes, starting the dishwasher, and cleaning the sink) and do a quick tidy up of our main living areas. Here are some ideas to help jump start your list:
- Make the bed
- Walk the dog(s)
- Empty the dishwasher and/or dish rack
- Start a load of laundry
- Clean up the kitchen from breakfast
- Wash the dishes
- Start the dishwasher
- Clean the kitchen
- Sweep
- Vacuum – (I highly recommend investing in a robot vacuum. My parents gifted us this one last Christmas, and since it’s just Chris and I, running it once daily is perfect for us and we barely have to bust out our broom or stick vacuum.)
- Fold/put away laundry
2. Add in the weekly/monthly tasks.
Even though you’ll have a basis for your daily routine at home, it’s bound to look a bit different each day. This will be especially true when it’s time to add in weekly and monthly tasks. I recommend that you simply just build them into your day. These could be in a separate list that you refer to when going over your daily routine at home. The weekly tasks in my home include watering plants, grocery shopping, meal planning, laundry, taking the trash out, and cleaning the toilets. Some monthly tasks include cleaning the fridge and freezer out, mopping, cleaning the cars out, deep cleaning the bathrooms, and more. A lot of these weekly and monthly tasks also depend on the season and where you live. Keeping that all in mind, here are some more ideas to consider:
- Watering plants
- Tending the garden
- Grocery shopping
- Meal planning
- Restocking spices/ the pantry
- Laundry
- Taking the trash out
- Mowing the lawn
- Cleaning bathrooms
- Washing sheets
- Cleaning the fridge and freezer
- Sweeping
- Mopping
- Dusting
3. Consider a rotating schedule.
Some people find it easy to follow a rotating schedule when it comes to keeping up with their home. For me, my daily non-negotiables plus a weekly task here in there is plenty to keep my home in good shape. But for those with little kids running around or bigger households, a quick clean might not cut it. So Mondays might be when you focus on cleaning the bathrooms, Tuesdays are for scrubbing the kitchen, Wednesdays for mopping, and so on. 4. Incorporate your personal routines.
This is one of my favorite quotes about home:
“a house is made of bricks and beams. a home is made of hopes and dreams.”
And it’s so true! As humans, we have all sorts of hopes and dreams. We are the ones who make our houses homes. So since you’re part of your home, you need to make sure you’re looking after yourself. Of course there will always be chores to do around the house, but your morning routine or skincare routine should absolutely come first. When you are feeling your best, you will be able to do your best with any task at hand.
