New year, new you! That’s what they always say, right? Having a New Year reset is what you need to make changes in your life and have a fresh start.
A New Year reset is when you set time aside to sit down and reflect on the goals you want to achieve and the habits you want to adopt in the new year. You get to dream up your ideals and create a plan to achieve all it is that you want to do. Of course, this plan will consist of routine(s). I suggest conducting your reset on New Year’s Day or a few days before or after it. Also, be sure to make it an enjoyable experience — make a cup of tea, pull out your favorite highlighters, light a candle and get to it.
Here are the 5 tips you’ll want to follow to have a rewarding New Year reset:
1. Assess your life.
Think back to the previous year. Ask yourself these categorical questions: What worked? What didn’t work? What did you want to do that didn’t happen? Brain dump all these thoughts down and then organize them into those categories. When you go to build your new routines, keep the parts from last year that worked and make space for the things that you still want to do. It’s also very important that you cut anything that doesn’t serve you any longer. Visit my post Building A Routine | The 5 Best Steps For Success for more guidance on this step.
2. Look ahead.
Envision the year as a whole. Break it up into seasons or months and establish some goals you want to achieve by those timestamps. Then ask yourself: What routines can I adopt today that will serve these bigger goals? Will the routines I choose today serve later versions of myself? The beauty of routine is that while it helps us to stay present and check off items on our to-do list, it also always pushes us in a forward direction.
3. Create multiple routines.
While this might sound overwhelming, it’s actually a great way to start small. Lots of New Year’s resolutions are way too ambitious and a lot of people fall off the bandwagon within a few weeks or days. Let’s say you decide in your New Year reset that you want to completely revamp your days. This means you’ll be following brand new morning, work day and evening routines. In attempts to not bite off more than you can chew, maybe start out with one of those routines. Once you’ve got it down, then you can start incorporating the other ones into your life. 4. Set yourself up for success.
By now, you should have all your goals and routines planned out. But before you jump in, take the time to prepare for your fresh start. This could consist of deep cleaning your house, decluttering your desk and digital spaces, meal prepping and so much more. If there’s any way you can remove a roadblock to being successful from the very beginning of your new journey, this is the time to address it.
5. Try it, tweak it!
This all comes back to being too ambitious when we are goal setting. I know I fall victim to this all the time. I find myself to be gung-ho when creating a new routine for myself because it’s super exciting. If this happens to you too and you’re finding your 80-step morning skincare routine to be a bit much, there’s no issue with revisiting your routine and dialing it back. This is not a sign of weakness or failure! Sometimes things sound great on paper, but it’s the real-life experiences that tell the real tale. Failure would be just giving up completely and never trying again. It doesn’t have to go that way!
Having a New Year reset allows you to reflect, reset, and renew. There’s nothing better than a clean slate and deciding with what you want to do with it.
